Delfont Mackintosh

Victoria Palace Theatre

The Project

Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, a theatre group owned by British theatrical producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, acquired Victoria Palace Theatre in 2014. The Grade II* listed theatre was extended, remodelled and refurbished, whilst maintaining its historic features and touch. Our client’s objectives were to maximise the potential of the stage and flytower and extend the back-of-house facilities, improve the comfort of the auditorium to seat 1528 and maximise the amount of foyer space and front-of house areas.

Overcoming Challenges

The site was logistically challenging due to Victoria Street being a Red Route and the proximity of Victoria train station. Deliveries had to be coordinated with several main contractors who were working on the VSU (Victoria Station Upgrade) and the new LandSec Nova Scheme development. Close liaison with had third parties including LUL, LandSec, Thames Water, UKPN, TFL and Westminster City Council was required.

M&E services including UKPN interface needed to be closely monitored to ensure power and theatre systems were not Interrupted when the building became operational and shows were live.

Cooperation between 8build and other main contractors adjacent to the theatre was key to ensure that there was minimal disruption to the adjacent premises and adjacent construction projects currently being undertaken.

The project included 30 CDP packages which required close collaboration between our subcontractors and various members of the design team.
