8build have been appointed by ‘The Box Office,’ for a new exhibition and office building in London’s Shoreditch. A charitable trust initiated this exciting new development to celebrate the unique history of the site as the location of ‘The Theatre’, which was the first polygonal purpose built theatre and precursor to The Globe.
The proposed new facility will comprise of a five-storey concrete framed building with basement. The GF and mezzanine of the building will be used as an exhibition, education and performance space. The space is designed so that it can spill out into the landscape and connect with it visually through shared materials and geometry. The upper four floors will be completed to a CAT A office space and will be serviced to be either self-contained or let as a whole.
A foreseen challenge is the potential delays on the piling/ groundworks. The site is of Archaeological interest, MOLA will be investing all the ground and could potentially uncover various ‘interesting’ unearthed materials; this will need to be managed and incorporated into the programme.
The RC Frame will be constructed in very close proximity to Party Walls and neighbouring properties on North, South, and West elevations. This will require constant monitoring and close liaison with all residents.
