On Wednesday 10th March, 15 students from Petchey Academy in Hackney attended the 8build Construction Careers Open House funded by the City of London Corporation.
Students spent a highly interactive day at 8build offices finding out about roles in a typical construction firm. 8build Directors Andy Tooley and Andy Marr, along with other staff members discussed their roles at 8build and their specific educational career paths.
To help the students get a better understanding of the industry they were divided into teams to each design and build a tower. They had to plan and cost their works with meticulous detail and were scored on their costing, design and functionality of the building.
They also visited an 8build project being undertaken for the City of London, where they had a brief tour and were shown how to use floor plans to determine the location of the new office spaces.
Inspire the education business partnership in Hackney were delighted with the day Jo Dale, the programme manager stated ‘I feel it was a highly successful event that the students got a lot out of’.
This has been the second year that 8build has hosted the construction careers open house and is unlikely to be the last.
